JazmineJazmine was born and raised to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam, Jazmine's mother, is a former backing singer for Philadelphia International Records. At the age of five, older, her father was offered in the role of curator at the city's Historic Strawberry Mansion in the Strawberry Mansion section, and her family relocated to the historic landmark. In 2005 she graduated from Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts with an alumna of the vocal music department. Sullivan performed as a contralto for the choir for children and several years later was a part of the adult choir. Sullivan had limited exposure to secular music. She recalls when she was singing solo in a church service when someone advised her to join the gospel label. However, she was not ready for the job. "Then when McDonald's had a competition for students in big cities and I was offered the chance to perform 'Accept What God Gives' on Showtime on the Apollo and the audience were very supportive". The singer performed along with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday celebration at 13. Sullivan signed her first contract to Jive Records when she was fifteen. She recorded the entire album but it was never released. Sullivan was later dropped off the record label. They maintained a friendship with Missy Elliott who wrote and recorded some of the songs from her debut, including the buzz single "Backstabbers" composed by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
